JobStreet.com holds biggest student career congress

Rolls out a career adventure during and after the event JobStreet.com

The No. 1 Job Site in the Philippines, JobStreet.com, holds the biggest campus career event for students anew – the Career Congress 2011 for Student Leaders—on September 20, Tuesday, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

Themed "Leadership plus the Power of Three," the event is envisioned to gather thousands of student leaders from over 100 participating colleges and universities. Esteemed speakers and trainers will discuss how student leaders should practice and maximize their leadership skills while honing other most sought after skills by employers based on the study conducted by the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP). These skills that have been highlighted in that study are communication skills, critical thinking skills and initiative.

Aside from the talks, the event shall be capped by a Choose Your Own Adventure which allows participants to have first-hand experience in resume screening, mock interviews and on-the-job training applications with more than 100 employer representatives and key sponsors of the event.

"This segment is an innovation… We would like the event to be a combination of theory and application at the same time… With this in mind, the Career Congress 2011 becomes a full-packed career event that will definitely prepare students for the workplace," says Yoda Buyco, marketing director of JobStreet.com.

But the adventure will not stop at the Career Congress. Even after the Congress, student will get the chance to share their learnings with their fellow students through a project which will be launched by the host job site also on September 20.

Maricar Estrabo, marketing specialist for campus segment explains, "We want the student leaders to realize that they are in a better position to help out their peers. They are role models in schools and being such, much is given and much is also expected of them. We want them to bring home the key learnings and share them with other students through the Project: Career Congress Shout Out Challenge which will be launched during the event."

The Career Congress 2011 for Student Leaders comes after the successful staging of the Career Congress 2011 for Administrators in Manila last August 26, Friday at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City where almost 500 school deans, practicum and career placement heads, guidance counselors and HR practitioners met at the said event which also marked the launch of a new program spearheaded by JobStreet.com in partnership with the National Youth Commission, the Department of Labor and Employment- Institute of Labor Studies and the Commission on Higher Education. Called the National Internship Movement, the project is the first in the Philippines and aims to increase the employability of graduating students via creating impactful, creative and sustainable internship programs.

The said program was likewise launched for Visayas and Mindanao through the Cebu Leg of the Career Congress last September 2 which was graced by over 100 employer and school representatives in the said region.

Another highlight of the Administrator’s legs in Manila and Cebu was the "matching exercises" between employers and academe representatives. For the past three years, JobStreet.com, has been instrumental in creating industry and academe linkages through the Career Congress. Last August 26 and September 2, the said leading job site once again conducted this activity to pave the way for the forging of new partnerships between schools and companies. "JobStreet.com’s mission is to improve lives through better careers. But we also understand that we have to spread this mission to others. We are very fortunate because the government, the employer and the academe sectors have seen our sincerity in the mission through our projects and they continuously support us in all these endeavors," Grace Colet, the job site’s country manager says. She further adds, "We hope that by being an instrument for these partnerships, we have become an agent of meaningful change in the country."

We are in search for answers, for fulfillment and gratification. We need to be surrounded by love and warmth, growth and good. We know there is nothing better than a genuine laugh or a heartfelt hug. We are moved by the storytellers, the dreamers, the drifters, the people whose lives are different than ours, that we can learn from. We are drawn to new surroundings and unique experiences. As we fall in love with so many things around us, sometimes it is hard to keep track. We love and we continuously holding on for that love. We love different. We love doing things that terrify us because we know those are the moments that we grow. We love looking back and seeing that we have accomplished what we never thought we could, things we never thought were even a possibility. Because it is in those moments we know we are becoming the people we were always intended to be. We leap before we look sometimes. It is finding ourselves when we didn’t know we were lost and continuing to find ourselves over and over again. It is kissing a cute stranger under the stars, waving at a baby we pass on the street, helping someone who cannot repay us. It is jotting down a funny memory or a beautiful quote we can’t forget. My faith has been tested, but it always remains. I have grandiose plans and an endless list of options; the places that I want to explore and journeys that I want to take. I don’t always know how I will accomplish something, I just know some ways and the courage of somehow—I will. Life for me is a puzzle of creating moments. It is finding my next adventure. It is setting my feet on new sands, diving into new seas. It is laughing with a group of strangers, singing words to songs that I don’t know matters. It is knowing that there is a whole wide world out there just waiting for me to discover it. It is the feeling that there is no better time than right now to do what we have always wanted to do, so why not go? Do it.
